Wizard of OzLook out, Toto.
Five or six characters will fly when approximately 100 Grand Island Senior High School students perform "The Wizard of Oz" Oct. 28 through Nov. 1 in the school's auditorium at 2124 N. Lafayette Ave.
Flying actors in a high school production of "The Wizard of Oz" is unusual, said Greg Ulmer, director of theatre.
"Most high school productions of 'The Wizard of Oz' do not incorporate the flying, because it takes a lot of extra rehearsal time, and they don't have a large enough stage," Ulmer said.
This year's school musical has a few other tricks, as well.
One of the performances is on Halloween. Ulmer wants Grand Island families to plan ahead and attend the musical as part of their Halloween activities. Children who attend the Oct. 31 performance dressed in Wizard of Oz costumes will receive treat bags, he said.
The musical will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, through Saturday, Oct. 31, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1.
Tickets will be available to purchase beginning Oct. 5 at parent-teacher conferences, Ulmer said. They can also be purchased at the school's activities office. Beginning Oct. 19, tickets will be sold from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Friday near the auditorium entrance.
Tickets are $12 and $10 per person for reserved seating and $8 for general admission for seating in the balcony.
Lead actors in the musical are Katie Pracheil (Dorothy Gale), Becca Holloway (Wicked Witch), Maggie Haberman (Glinda), Seth Ulmer (Scarecrow), Carsten Bosselman (Tin Man), Nathan Larsen (Lion), Evan Stewart (Wizard), Betsy Kincanon (Almira Gulch), and Ali Holmes (Aunt Em).
A 25-person orchestra comprised of high school students and adults will accompany the actors.
Stage directors are Greg Ulmer and John Haberman. Christine Kier is the assistant stage director. Musical directors are Adam Lambert and Taylor Jones.
