Folk tales include many different types of stories originating in popular culture.  They are usually passed down to each generation by word of mouth.  Some folk tale categories are fables, fairy tales, legends, fables, jokes, and tall tales.  The stories can include magic.  The characters can be people, animals, or objects (ex: moon, fire) and they have human characteristics such as talking.  The folk tales in this book explain why something in nature is the way it is, how it happened, or how something came to be that way.  For example, how zebras got it stripes or how thunder and lightning are created.
