Matisse was the leader of the Fauve movement. This was a group of French painters whose style was to use harsh brush strokes and bright colors. Fuaveism was popular from about 1903 until 1907. In French the word means “wild animal”.
Matisse painted human bodies, still life and scenes inside of buildings. One school of art he attended was for textile makers. He learned the love of tapestries, fabrics and texture, which would later be seen in many of his paintings. Later in life he began to work with bits of paper. He turned the scraps and shapes into collages about his feelings. His many travels brought him many experiences which added to and changed his career. He painted, sculpted, and sketched and made his famous “The Tree of Life” stained glass window for the Venice Chapel in France.
