Dodge Elementary School, Grand Island, Nebraska

The School Years of 1888

There are many differences and similarities in country schools and in our schools today, and I would like to tell you them. Some things that are the same are that we both have bathrooms and that we both have hard-covered books. We also have desks to write on and to put supplies in. The other things that are the same are that we both get heat, we both have plays and subjects, and we both get discipline.

Some different things that I learned are they had different positions to sit in and they called their bathrooms privies. Some other things that are different are they didn't have any principal and that their classes had kids of all ages. Last but not least is that instead of using pencils they used what they call dip pens. I learned so much about country schools and I hope you learned a lot, too.
