Dodge Elementary School , Grand Island, Nebraska

The Stuhr Museum Country School in 1888

The teacher in 1888 taught all the grades. Teachers today teach one grade. In 1888, there was no principal. In 1998, there is a principal. The chalkboards are the same. The types of heat are different. In 1888, they had a wood-burning stove. In 1998, we have a heat pump in the house and the school. Kids in 1888 had to buy their books. In 1998, the school gives us our books. In 1888, the restrooms were called privies and were outside. They had separate ones for girls and boys. Today, we have modern restrooms inside. In 1888, they wrote with dip pens and we write with pencils and pens. I enjoyed my day at Stuhr country school and I learned a lot.
