The School of 1888

I liked the wood burning stove. I didn't like sitting so close to the stove because I was so hot that I felt like I was cooking. I was so hot there because of the wood burning stove in the middle of the room. Outside, it was frozen and when we finally got in the school it was warm.

I liked to write with the ink pens. We dipped them in ink and wrote fancy letters. I liked the black coal.

We had to learn to stand or sit in different positions for each activity we did. I didn't like the positions because you are supposed to stand up when you are reading. They had small and big desks, because they had lots of different ages in the class. If they brought horses they needed to take care of them. If some people had 4 or 5 children the teacher would stay longer with them. There were two little outside bathrooms. They had a church close to the school. They had to buy books of their own. When they were outside the teacher had to ring the bell so the kids could come in. I learned a lot about school in 1888.
