Our trip to the 1888 country school house showed me that country schools of 1888 are different than our schools today. They had sitting positions. 1 would be to look straight ahead with your hands gripping the chair. There were also positions 2, 3, 4 front and 4 back. We had to write with dip ink pens that had nibs. When I wrote, my pen squeaked. There are differences and similarities in 1888 country schools and 1998 modern schools today. Two differences are that 1888 country schools had privies outside and 1998 modern schools have rest rooms inside. 1888 schools had wood stoves for heat and 1998 schools have heating systems. The 1888 school was also the same as some modern schools. We have some of the same rules like raise your hand, no talking and listen to the teacher. Two other similarities are that 1888 country schools have plays and programs, 1998 schools also have plays and programs. 1888 country schools and 1998 schools both have the same subjects such as spelling, math, reading, penmanship, history, and recess. I had fun learning about 1888 country schools and I hope you can go. |
