Dodge Elementary School, Grand Island, Nebraska

School in 1888

Today I am going to tell you about when we went to the Stuhr Museum. We looked at some things. They had some of the same things we have at Dodge School. In 1888, they had ink pens. But they had to buy their own books. They had penmanship like us in school, but the difference is that they raised their hands and stood up to say their answers. They had small and big desks. One teacher taught all the grades. They had recess, too. The Stuhr teacher passed around a cow ball so everybody could see it. They had a wood-burning stove and we have a heater in school. They had a small chalkboard in their desks so they could do math on it. It was so cool at the Stuhr Museum Country School.
